[edit] In his own words
I first heard about join me when i was a bit ill, and off work for the day. I was watching the usual rubbish on daytime tv, then this character called Danny Wallace turns up on Richard and Judy. I thought it was a fantastic idea, but due to my notoriously bad memory, i forgot about it.
A couple of months later, i was very much engulfed in my own project. My project was a bit of a stupid one. I had arranged a bet with a guy whom i am no longer friends with, and was damned that i was going to see it through. He bet me that i couldn't gatecrash 100 weddings of people i didn't know. It wasn't going to be nasty gatecrashing...but i was to go to the wedding and/or evening "do".During one of these weddings that i'd crashed, i chanced upon speaking to a guy who was quite drunk, but bought me a drink. He then informed me that this was his first RAOK. RAOK? I said. He went on to explain and my memory soon became clear again as to what he was on about. That was about July/ August 2004. The next day, with a bad hangover from the evening do the night before, I wandered into the town where i'd ended up and found a small waterstones. I walked in and bought Join Me, and made an attempt to read it on my train back home. This was not to be and my lack of sleep, and too much drink got the better of me and i was sick.
The next day, (saturday) I was on my way to another wedding and decided to take the book with me. All i had on me was my copy of Join Me and my digital camera...and some cash for what i was assuming was going to be another good night of partying at somebody elses big day. I got to the church where the wedding was, but i was about 10 minutes too late, and i wasn't about to just walk in like i owned the place, so i found a nice little spot, sat down and carried on reading. I was really getting into it when the new bride and groom came out of the church....shit...i had to take some pics. so i did.
So i was now free for the majority of the day to go on reading. At the evening do, I proceeded to dance with bridesmaids, chat with mother in laws, and even raise a toast to the bride and groom. This is all i can remember of the night as it was quite soon after that all the champagne and guiness hit me and i woke up sat down on a pavement, with my arm around a big bridesmaid. The next morning i awoke, and realised that i'd left my book and camera at the do. I raced over to get them back, but somebody had swiped them both. Bastards.
And now to cut a long story short, because i've got work to do. I bought another copy of join me. Lost another 2 digital cameras in drunken weddings, then went a bit mad because of it all, had to quit my job, then found friendship with loads of great joinee people. The best being Hannah Bukley Reynolds, and Steve Phillips....they make me laugh, and they're great people, and i thank danny for writing the book, otherwise i wouldn't have met them.
incidentally...i have knocked the whole weddings on the head...but i will be at a total of 40 by august this year.
