Footballer with Southampton (for whom he was the youngest player to have appeared in 1980) and Manchester United, whom he helped to FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup victories in the early 1990s, heralding the start of Alex Ferguson's successes.

He won a single England cap against Egypt in 1988, in which match he scored.

An increase in injuries in the latter part of his career were explained in 1996 when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis

Brothers of Rodney (who enjoyed a long and successful spell at Glasgow Rangers) and Ray (the latter two are twins) were also footballers, and in 1988 they became the only three brothers to have played together in the same team (Southampton) in the English top-flight.
